The Royal Tea

Forget the polished portraits, the official speeches and the history books that make everyone look respectable. Behind the crowns, empires and celebrated achievements were jealous rivals, complicated romances, spectacular feuds, questionable decisions and private dramas that could rival any modern celebrity scandal.

Welcome to The Royal Tea, where history gets a little more interesting.

Every week, we uncover the lesser-known stories behind famous people from around the world: rulers who couldn't get along, writers with complicated private lives, leaders whose reputations were carefully manufactured, and extraordinary incidents that history nearly forgot.

From royal courts and political power struggles to artists, explorers, scientists and cultural icons, no era is too distant and no country is off the map.

But there's one rule: the gossip must come with receipts. We'll separate documented events from disputed anecdotes, expose popular myths, and explain when the historical record leaves us with more questions than answers.

Expect sharp storytelling, unexpected revelations and the occasional raised eyebrow. History was never as well-behaved as its portraits suggest.

Pull up a chair. The past has some explaining to do.
